patriotism

it is confusing to think of patriotism as a willingness to "die for one's country". why would anyone go willingly into battle to defend their country? i suspect it's something more practical - to protect family and friends, or loved ones. on the battlefield, it's certain that the only thing which keeps a soldier alive is the protection of fellow comrades, definitely not the thought of one's country! lofty ideals of protection of society and of a certain way of living are simply that - ideals.
