love your wife
thot for today:
would you lay your life down for your spouse?
read in the papers the past 2 days that a local celebrity had liver failure and would have died within this week, if not for her boyfriend, also a local celeb, donating part of his liver to her. mind you, he was a healthy cute guy who would have had no problems moving on to another lovely young lady. but he chose her life above his, and that makes me want to jump up and down and scream "good for you!"...
this guy's just too precious in my humble opinion...

love lost?
thot for the day:
'tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all...
wise saying from a wiser man. i agree entirely of course, but only with the benefit of hindsight. the times i spent crying over loves lost were not spent whilst dwelling on how life will get better. life just sucked then, especially when thoughts of her sweet voice constantly haunt you.
i once said i would wait ten years for a woman i loved. i was convinced then that no one else would do nor that anyone else would come by my way, who would be better than her.
i was wrong, of course. i had tweaked and tinkered with the image of her perfectness in my mind so much, that the woman i loved no longer resembled the woman i wanted. simply put, she just wasn't the person i had come to love so much.
i didn't realise that, and i cried for weeks, months. and then i grew up. and i let go.
sometimes, she came back to haunt me. but by then i recognised why it could never have worked out. that made it easier to let go as well.

across the causeway
thought of the day:
"why can't singaporeans and malaysians get along?"
malaysia and singapore are inextricably linked in many ways, such that it is almost impossible to imagine one country surviving without the other. the societies of both countries share a common history and many families have cross-border ties. businesses across the causeway rely on each other as well as compete with each other.
so why can't we all get along?!?!
the usual arguments about malaysia's "elder brother" attitude, the jealousies of malaysians at singapore's riches, singaporeans' arrongance, malaysians' lackadaisical attitudes on contractual agreements, et al, are no doubt true.
but is there another perspective to the whole picture?

french elections
ahhh...it feels as if i've not posted since yesterday
but a quick look reveals that it's been almost a week since my last post.
issue for the day:
"le pen wins the right to face off with chirac in french presidential elections"
cnn reports shock and horror at the result, from which jospin retires as a result (he fnished third).
hmm... when a racist gets a chance to lead a G8 country,
i suppose things are coming to a head somewhat...
man united thrashed chelsea 3 - 0 on saturday
but liverpool and arsenal both won at home by identical 2 - 0 scorelines against sunderland and ipswich respectively to maintain status quo.
doesn't look good at all... sighh... maybe the champions league then...

do early mornings ever have any meaning?
only if you live in the country i suppose..
i watched forrest gump the other night on channel 5 and was struck by the wondrous times in which he lived.
the sincerety and honesty with which he loved jenny was overwhelming. i don't think anyone would be capable of such an act today..

virgins
issue of the day:
virginity in singapore - will you marry a non-virgin?
virginity, or the lack of it, was already a non-issue back in the 60s for people in the US.
paradigm shifts are constants in any society. as a community matures, it is inevitable that they exert more influence on other less developed communities. therefore, the "yellow culture" phenomenon, and the fact that singaporean kids want to look like Ice-T, Michael Jordan or Ayumi. and to imitate these people's sexual practices.
who knows, with AIDS and other (more deadly?) STDs on the way, we might all find that a paradigm shift will occur sooner rather than later. it may end up with all our children hold much more "traditional" values compared to us.

patriotism
it is confusing to think of patriotism as a willingness to "die for one's country". why would anyone go willingly into battle to defend their country? i suspect it's something more practical - to protect family and friends, or loved ones. on the battlefield, it's certain that the only thing which keeps a soldier alive is the protection of fellow comrades, definitely not the thought of one's country! lofty ideals of protection of society and of a certain way of living are simply that - ideals.
